Name: Ruth Smith Meyer
Age: 69 by years (Can’t believe it!) 49 by feelings (Will YOU believe that?)
Where you live: In the towns of Listowel and Ailsa Craig
Ruth, a Canadian writer remarried after the death of her first husband, apportions life mostly between two communities. She enjoys interaction with her children, and step-children, in-laws, and grandchildren. She is an active member of The Word Guild, Inscribe and Ready Writers of London. That keeps her running!
1. What activities do you enjoy most in winter?
I used to enjoy skating and cross-country skiing. I don’t do any of the former and haven’t done much of the latter in recent years. When the weather is suitable I still enjoy a brisk walk.
2. What equipment is a “must” at this time of year?
Good boots with grip for my feet, scarves to keep my sinuses from objecting to the cold, ear muffs to protect my ears, jackets or sweaters for layering so they can be removed or added as needed.
3. How do you feel about New Year Resolutions?
My resolutions are made by inspiration rather than calendar dates.
4. What was the best resolution you’ve ever made?
Not to limit my resolutions to New Year’s Day
5. What was the worst resolution you’ve ever made?
The one that got broken every February or March for about 18 to 20 years – to keep accurate account of every penny so that at the end of the year I could evaluate my spending.
6. How do you manage to keep up your resolution into the summer?
Perhaps the best way to keep resolutions in the summer, no matter when they are made, is to include some flexibility in your resolutions. Plan to achieve your goals in a different or more relaxed manner that the rest of the year. If you have school-age children, include them in the fun of exercise, diet, writing or whatever. Make it a fun family affair.
7. Do you share your resolutions with anyone?
Depending on the resolution, but usually I do. Some that I have broken repeatedly, or been less than successful with, I have tried to find ways to prove to myself I can do it before sharing it. Does that mean that my resolve isn’t very strong and that I have provided room for failure?
8. Do you record your resolutions anywhere?
Most often I have them on sticky notes all over the place or paper chains with a link (for example) for every pound I want to lose, or every article I want to write, every time I walk a mile further, so that I can break it off and throw it away, giving me a sense of satisfaction.
9. What top 3 health tips do you have to manage in this holiday season?
Park a little further from the stores where you shop.
Plan for walking time.
Have a cup of tea or even just water before a big meal or a party and keep something low-calorie in your hand or on your plate.
Put relationship people ahead of food -That's four, but the last one is most important!
Thanks, Ruth!
I like your idea of using a paper chain with a link to write down smaller goals. This is something I’ve never tried but sounds like fun!

Hi, I enjoyed reading your comments about resolutions. Especially in #3...that your resolutions are made by inspiration rather than calendar dates.
Until you put it in words, I didn't realize that I, too, often work that way as well. Better motivation for sure!
Have you ever been to Feige's in Listowel, Ruth? Best fine dining I've ever experienced!
Is it (Feige's) worth the drive to Listowel? :)
